So here we are again, July 4th, Independence Day- at least here in the good ol’ USA.  As we all head out to our barbecues, picnics and parties to eat exorbitant amounts of burgers, dogs, chicken, corn, salads  (heck, anyone else getting hungry??)  then to be followed by the awe inspiring displays of fireworks, I’ll ask you if you’ve ever given any real thought to what the word ‘Independence’ means to you?

I’ll be honest, when I was younger, actually as recently as three years ago, I never really thought about it.  I was always appreciative in regard to the significance  of the signing of the Declaration of Independence and what it meant to the USA. Specifically how us as Americans have benefited from the opportunities that it granted us. BUT, I never really thought about what ‘Independence’ or really the freedom associated with it would mean to me, as an individual.

There’s no right or wrong answer.  Everyone will have a different definition.  And isn’t that the great thing about freedom?

For me, ‘Independence’ and that freedom is finding that area of true happiness in my life.  But it wasn’t always that way…I used to think I had to define it by specific measures: Did I have a job I liked; Did I work for myself; Did I make enough money; Did I give my family the things that they wanted, or what I thought they wanted; etc.

Now I can simply look at how I feel each morning that I wake up and can ask myself, “Am I truly happy? Do I love my life? Do I love myself?”  If the answer is ‘yes’, then I have reached that sacred place.  I have that freedom.  I have ‘Independence’.

If I answer ‘no’, then I still have work to do.

So here’s to you and your ‘Independence’! Have a great day – you deserve it.
